Effectiveness of statins not determined by sex of patient, say U.S researchers
The effectiveness of statins in lowering cholesterol should not be determined by the sex of a patient, researchers in the U.S have suggested.
Clinical trials, the results of which were published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, found that statins reduced the risk of heart attack, stroke and death by 19% in women and 23% in men.
“From what we know now, gender shouldn't be a factor when someone is otherwise an appropriate candidate for statin therapy,” said lead researcher Dr. William Kostis.
