One in 12 people in the UK has implemented a smoking ban in their own home five years after the previous Labour government made it unlawful for people to smoke in public places, according to research from the Co-operative Pharmacy. Some 2,000 people were canvassed about their attitudes to smoking and a significant proportion said they had instigated their own ban in the confines of their property. The study, however, also revealed that 57% kept their habit a secret from partners, family and friends. Other statistics were revealing. One in eight smokers said they had given up despite smoking the “odd one,” while 51% who smoke one a day were under the impression they have quit. Smokers who kept their habit a secret from their partner made up 21% while 19.6% admitted to deceiving their children. “The smoking ban in public places has had a major effect on the health of the nation with a significant number of people giving up, but many smokers now try to keep their habit secret from their partner, children, friends and family,” said Fiona Caplan-Dean, clinical services manager at Co-operative Pharmacy, who have helped introduce NHS Quit Kits in stores in partnership with the Department of Health.
