The 2012 Sigma Conference

Pharmacists must have strong evidence base of services to provide health care
Mimi Lau, Numark`s director of professional services
Mimi Lau, Numark’s director of professional services, has told delegates at the company’s conference in Delhi that pharmacists must focus on delivering services if the industry is to gain recognition during the Government's reformation of the NHS.
Lau said that improving services was vital for pharmacy, given the impending new medicines service, and would go some way to determining whether pharmacy can ultimately become a primary health provider under GP consortia commissioning arrangements.
“We are absolutely delighted with the news about a new advanced service, even if it is long overdue,” she said. “We’re pleased that pharmacy has been recognised as a profession that can deliver and that the government has the confidence in us to do so. Let’s not prove them wrong. We are grateful to PSNC that their negotiations have succeeded in securing this money in a difficult economic climate against a backdrop of spending cuts.
“But let’s not forget that this longer term view of healthcare will ensure cost savings for the NHS as a result of our work. Contractors must now see the value of the service agenda and get behind it wholeheartedly. There can be no more excuses about not delivering. Pharmacists must see the bigger picture.”
Lau warned that if pharmacy fails to rise to the challenges and provide a strong evidence base of healthcare services, as well as engage with commissioners, it could be marginalised. “If we don't deliver as a profession, we face the very real risk of getting no pharmacy services in the future and an uncertain future regarding funding as reimbursement will continually be driven down,” she said.
“Numark will be helping its members by providing a package of support to ensure they, their teams and their businesses are equipped to deliver the new service. We would urge all independents to get behind this so they can take advantage of the financial benefits.”
