Eight senior managers from Alliance Healthcare/Alliance Boots raised over £60000 after completing an arduous Charity Cycle Challenge to raise funds for the Friends of EORTC (European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of Cancer).
The cyclists finished their non-stop cycle ride at 10.40pm on the 26 May 2012 having cycled over 1600km non-stop from John O’Groats to Land’s End (JOGLE) – a total of 79 hours and 40 minutes of near continuous riding.
The £60000 will go towards the creation of Europe’s first pan-European Biobank to store and analyse tumour samples. The Biobank will enable scientists to build up a long-term picture of how cancers grow and the individual genes that are associated with them. This information will then help experts decide which therapy is going to be of most benefit to individual patients.
Sir Christopher Mallaby chairman of EORTC Charitable Trust said: “I want to thank the brave JOGLERS for their superb physical effort and their success in raising funds for the EORTC Biobank. My warmest thanks to all at Alliance Healthcare who managed the happy event at Exeter on Saturday.
“All the money raised will go to the Biobank which will play a leading role in developing the new personalized treatments which will  bring a big step forward in treating cancer. The funds you are donating today will improve the treatment of cancer tomorrow. What a great cause! Thank you all!”
Eddie Lawson general counsel at the pharmaceutical wholesale division of Alliance Boots said: “I am delighted to have been able to take part in this momentous event which not only tested us physically and mentally but also enabled us to raise awareness of the wonderful work that the EORTC does and vital funds for the Biobank.
“The support and encouragement that we got from the Alliance Healthcare team at Exeter gave us a much-needed boost for the final challenging stretch.”
Sponsors included Reckitt Benckiser Vitabiotics TENA (SCA Hygiene Products) Unilever and L’Oreal Garnier.
