The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has extended the Serious Shortage Protocols (SSPs) for Fluoxetine 10mg tablets and Fluoxetine 40mg capsules.

The SSP for Fluoxetine 10mg tablets has been extended to March 31, 2021 and for Fluoxetine 40mg capsules, to September 25.

Both were previously notified to expire on September 11 and September 4 respectively.

Pharmacists are required to use the latest version of an SSP before considering the supply of an alternative product.

The reimbursement will be for the medicine supplied in accordance with the SSP and not the originally prescribed medicine.

The reimbursement price will account for VAT payment. Supply in accordance with the SSP will result in the following fees being paid to the contractor:

  • One Single Activity fee (currently £1.27)
  • One SSP fee (£5.35)

An SSP is issued when the DHSC decides there is a serious shortage of a specific medicine or appliance.
