Sigma caps the year with a Family Business Award

Sigma Pharmaceuticals was chosen as the Family Business of the Year Award at Hertfordshire Business Awards, to end an year of recognition off.

Chairman Dr Bharat Shah and Executive Director Rajiv Shah collected the award during a ceremony at Knebworth Barns on 22 November.

Founded in 1982, the company has been family owned and family run since its inception and transitioned from first to second generation leadership over the last three years.

It won the Business Excellence SME of the Year 2018 Award in October, from JITOPRENEURS, an annual global initiative of JITO (Jain International Trade Organisation) G2G.

Hatul Shah, Sigma’s Executive Director, was presented with the Dedicated Stalwart Award in September at the 21st Century Icon Awards hosted by Squared Watermelon.

Sigma cited the new strategic direction of the business as a major reason for the recognition it received throughout the year.

This included an investment in its new site and a first of its kind initiative to merge FMD (Falsified Medicines Directive) standards into one, ‘start-to-finish’ operation.

The new Directive, which is set to take effect in February 2019, will track every drug and medicine right through the supply chain from manufacturer, through to wholesaler, to pharmacist and eventually down to the hands of the patient.

The MHRA, during a recent inspection of Sigma’s new premises, ‘highly commended’ the wholesaler for including this Directive into its mainstream operation.

“We were delighted to be the recipients of all these prestigious awards that recognise business excellence and innovation,” commented Bharat Shah.

“As a wholesaler to the independent sector, we take service delivery and compliance issues very seriously, hence the substantial investment into FMD integration in our new plant. This new way of delivering medicines and drugs is designed to make life easier for pharmacists and to make tracking and accountability a daily routine.”
