Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, patients who wanted to ensure that those caring for them could see additional information to support their care needed to confirm their consent by requesting that their GP practice activate SCR with additional information (Photo: iStock).

Superdrug pharmacies are now expanding their free throat consultation service to ‘test and treat’ patients.

Patients visiting a Superdrug pharmacy with a sore throat will now be offered a free 10-minute consultation, which includes a series of questions to determine the symptoms.

If symptoms are determined appropriately, the pharmacy will offer a full throat examination which may include a diagnostic swab test.

All pharmacists, except those in Northern Ireland, are now able to prescribe an antibiotic treatment if the swab test identifies a bacterial sore throat.

The free throat swabbing service, first of its kind on the high street, is now available in over 190 Superdrug pharmacies across the country and it aims to save around 200,000 hours GP time, the company claims.
