To help the inoculation drive in Britain, pharmacy students from Newton Aycliffe joined forces at the Knights Pharmacy vaccination clinic in Bishop Auckland.
Sisters Alex and Georgia are both first year pharmacy students, one in Newcastle and the other in Sunderland.
Responding to an advertisement for clinic marshals, the pharmacy team realised their potential as vaccinators considering their career choice.
“I offered to put them both through full vaccine training, it’s great to give opportunities like this to pharmacy students as it will be a great step up the ladder of pharmacy experience and something that will hopefully have a positive impact on the rest of their career,” Pete Horrocks, superintendent at the Knights Pharmacy. said.
“It’s refreshing to see the next generation of healthcare professionals take such an important and early role,” he added.
Georgia, who has just completed first year at the university said it was the perfect opportunity for her to join the fight against the Covid.
“I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to make a small contribution to the collaborative effort to overcome the pandemic,” she said.
Alex, who started pharmacy degree a year ago, said: It is such a wonderful experience getting involved in direct patient care especially knowing the impact the vaccines service has.”
Dr Adam Todd from the Newcastle University, said “delighted to see our students putting their clinical skills to good use and working with our local partners to help the fight against Covid-19.”
As per latest data, more than 43 million people in the UK have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine.
The government aims to vaccinate all over-18 years with a first dose and two-thirds of adults with a second dose by July 19.
