The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has issued a medicine supply notification for Propantheline bromide (Pro-Banthine) 15mg tablets manufactured by Kyowa Kirin.

Propantheline 15mg tablets are expected to run out of stock by the end of May, but the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee says “an unlicensed, imported product is available.”

When prescribing such a product, however, prescribers must indicate on the FP10 prescription that an unlicensed product is required.

The PSNC adds: “This can be done by annotating the prescription with the following wording: “special order” and endorsed by the pharmacy as a non-Part VIIIB special with the following:

  • Amount dispensed over pack size used;
  • Invoice price per pack size from which the order was supplied less any discount or rebate;
  • Manufacturers’/importers’ MHRA licence number;
  • Batch number of the product supplied;
  • SP.”
