The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has announced its decision to leave the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), the global body representing pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences and pharmaceutical education.

RPS said it would not be renewing the organisational membership of FIP in 2022.

“We have carefully considered how best to serve our members and meet our Charter obligations and believe, at the current time, this decision will help us focus on delivery of our mission and vision,” it said in a statement.

RPS, one the 20 national pharmaceutical associations that founded FIP in 1912, added that it will remain a ‘friend and supporter’ of the Hague-headquartered organisation.

RPS also said it will remain an ‘outwardly focused and internationally aware’ organisation.

“We will continue to be an active participant in global pharmacy policy. We will be at the forefront of world-wide efforts to reduce antimicrobial resistance, end environmental harm and promote inclusiveness and diversity across the profession,” the statement read.

The Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the professional membership body for pharmaceutical scientists, is the only member organisation from the UK in FIP now, with London-based Commonwealth Pharmacists Association having the observer status.
