American health care company, Abott has voluntarily recalled powder formulas of Alimentum and EleCare after consumer complaints of bacterial contamination, the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC) said in an update.

This update follows a notification from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) which informed about four consumer complaints in the US relating to Cronobacter sakazakii or Salmonella Newport in infants after consuming powder infant formula.

The MHRA has urged healthcare professionals to contact all patients who have been dispensed the impacted batches immediately.

It also advised users of Alimentum or EleCare to immediately stop use of the product and contact the prescriber for a suitable alternative.

The drug regulator also informed that recall only impacts Alimentum and EleCare in the UK, and no other Abbott nutrition products are affected.
