  • Service ensures privacy and supports early mental health intervention

A 24/7 free mental health support text message service has been launched for the residents of Birmingham and Solihull.

The initiative comes from a partnership between Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (BSMHFT) and crisis text line SHOUT.

People can receive support from experienced mental health professionals with confidentiality if they text the word ‘space’ to 85258.

The initiative is for people struggling with anxiety, loneliness, depression or any other mental issues.

The service is available from today, and the records of the communication will not be present in the phone bills ensuring patient privacy.

“The new localised approach offered a first step for people who may not feel ready or able to talk in person or over the phone,” commented Roísìn Fallon-Williams, chief executive of the trust.

She also added that, "It also reflects our commitment to delivering the NHS Long Term Plan by empowering people to take control of their mental wellbeing and mental health early and reducing the risk of crisis."

Caroline Westley, director of income at Mental Health Innovations that built SHOUT said the service will ease people’s pressure by being a safe companion in their mental health journey.
