The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency on Friday granted emergency use authorisation to Moderna Inc’s Covid-19 vaccine, making it the third vaccine to receive regulatory approval in the UK.
The new jab requires temperatures of around -20C for shipping and although the UK has now pre-ordered 17 million doses of Moderna's vaccines, supplies are not expected to be available until the spring.
The vaccine will be available for free and the government says it's working with the devolved administrations to ensure fair deployment across the UK.
The vaccine was about 95 per cent effective at preventing illness in clinical trials that found no serious safety issues.
Nearly 1.5 million people in the UK have already been vaccinated with the Pfizer/BioNTech and Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccines.
