India-based hospital group Narayana Health is making a foray to the UK market by acquiring healthcare provider Practice Plus Group Hospitals for £183 million.
Owned by Bridgepoint, a leading private equity firm, Practice Plus Group manages 12 hospitals and surgical centres across the UK, with a focus on ophthalmology, orthopaedics and general surgery.
Through this acquisition, Bengaluru-headquartered Narayana Health plans to integrate the hospital division of Practice Plus Group into its existing operations.
Narayana Health operates a network of primary, secondary and tertiary care facilities in India and the Caribbean.
It employs 18,822 employees, including 3,868 doctors and specialists, and runs several centres of excellence in different medical fields.
The company’s subsidiaries are Narayana One Health (NH Integrated Care) and Narayana Health Insurance.
Practice Plus Group is the fourth-largest provider for the UK’s National Health Service (NHS).
“Like Narayana Health, Practice Plus Group recognised that the majority of patients were struggling to access healthcare, while only a minority could afford costly private healthcare,” Dr Devi Prasad Shetty, chairman of Narayana Health said in a statement.
“We have both been working to meet the demands of those in between, and to offer a choice of more accessible private healthcare.”
Practice Plus Group chief executive Jim Easton said: “Dr Shetty and Narayana Health have an enviable reputation for high-quality, efficient healthcare with a human touch and I’m excited about what Practice Plus Group’s hospitals and surgical centres can achieve with the commitment and expertise of Narayana Health behind us.”
