Parents and caregivers are advised to discontinue use of Nutrition Ignition Kids Magnesium Glycinate Gummies due to the presence of undeclared melatonin, a prescription-only medicine.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) had tested two batches of these gummies and found that each of them contained between 1.5 and 1.7mg of melatonin.
Depending on the age of the child, the product packaging advised a dose of 1 or 2 gummies per day, but melatonin is not listed on the product’s packaging.
Melatonin is authorised for use in the UK as a prescription medicine for specific sleep disorders in both adults and children over the age of six years.
Taking too much melatonin can cause drowsiness, headache, dizziness, and nausea.
The product is sold online as a food supplement and MHRA has taken action to remove it from sale and listing.
The MHRA advised those having this product at home to store it securely in a tamper-proof container out of children's reach, until they can take it to any pharmacy for disposal.
MHRA chief safety officer Dr Alison Cave said, “We advise any parent or caregiver to stop use of this product and safely dispose of it."
