Guernsey pharmacies to experience staffing shortage; urge residents 'to wait' for meds post Easter

Guernsey pharmacies to experience staffing shortage; urge residents 'to wait' for meds post Easter

Preparation advised as Guernsey pharmacies expected to "prioritise urgent" and "acute prescriptions "

The States of Guernsey have urged Islanders to plan ahead for their medication needs ahead of the upcoming Easter weekend. With a reduced number of pharmacies expected to be open during the holiday, residents are being asked to arrange for their repeat prescriptions well in advance.

Alternatively, the government body announced that residents can opt to wait until after the Easter period if they already have an ample supply of medication at home.

This proactive measure aims to provide support to pharmacies and their staff, particularly during a period where demand for healthcare services may be heightened.

Supporting pharmacies amidst reduced availability

By obtaining repeat prescriptions ahead of time, pharmacists can focus on prioritising urgent and acute prescriptions for individuals who may require immediate medical attention over the Easter weekend.

According to Teena Bhogal, Chief Pharmacist," Pharmacies and their staff continue to work extremely hard to provide essential services. This includes not just the supply of our medications; they are also a valuable source of health information and advice for our community. "

"While some pharmacy contractors may choose to remain open during public holidays to ensure continued access to their services, staffing levels are expected to be reduced during these times. Therefore, planning ahead can significantly assist pharmacies in managing their workload effectively," she added.

Prescriptions can be dispensed up to four business days before the date listed on the prescription, subject to the pharmacist's discretion and availability of stock.

Additionally, individuals who will be off the island on the date of their next prescription may also arrange to have it dispensed in advance.

The proactive initiative underscores the collaborative effort needed to ensure the smooth functioning of healthcare services, particularly during periods of increased demand or reduced staffing to alleviate pressure on pharmacies and ensure continued access to vital healthcare resources.
