Professor Joy Wingfield, a pharmacy law authority and founder of the Pharmacy Law & Ethics Association, has died from Covid-19.

She was chair of the PLEA until 2015 and made a major contribution, breaking new ground in the way she brought to the fore the subject of ethics in pharmacy teaching and practice.

Professor Wingfield began as an inspector of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain when the Society was a regulator of the pharmacy profession.

“A titan in the field of pharmacy law and ethics,” Joy edited Dale & Appelbe’s Pharmacy and Medicines Law for nearly a quarter of a century.

She wrote widely on pharmacy ethics, co-authoring Pharmacy Ethics and Decision Making (2007) and writing Practical Exercises in Pharmacy Law and Ethics (1997, 2002).

Following her retirement, Joy became honorary professor of Pharmacy Law and Ethics at the University of Nottingham. Until 2017, she maintained a pharmacy consultancy – Wingfield Works – enabling pharmacists and organisations to continue to benefit from her expertise and wisdom.

When approached by Pharmacy Business, her successor at PLEA David Reissner fondly remembered Professor Wingfield and said: “I first met Joy in the early 1980s when I was representing a pharmacist and she was an inspector of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

“I am honoured that when she retired, she asked me to take over from her as co-editor of Pharmacy Law & Ethics and also to follow her as chair of the Pharmacy Law & Ethics Association.”

Here are of the number of tributes and condolences being shared across Twitter timelines over her untimely demise:
