Esomeprazole 40mg iv powder for solution is expected to face supply disruption following limited supply and increased demand.

Last month, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) had issued a medicine supply notification in for esomeprazole 40mg iv powder for solution of Grunenthal, Ranbaxy, and Tilomed.

Ranbaxy and Tilomed esomeprazole 40mg iv powder for solution is out of stock.

Limited supplies of Grunenthal product will remain available, but entire stock is expected to be depleted w/c August 24.

Bowmed esomeprazole injection is currently available but unable to support a steep rise in demand.

Ranbaxy and Tilomed expect a resupply of the product in September and Grunenthal in early 2021.

Specialist importers have indicated that unlicensed imports of esomeprazole injection can be sourced.

The following specialist importers have confirmed they can source unlicensed esomeprazole injection.

Importer Product
Alium Medical Esomeprazole injection
Durbin PLC Esomeprazole injection

There is currently no listing on dm+d for the imported product for prescribers to select using their prescribing systems. Therefore, an EPS prescription for unlicensed Esomeprazole 40mg powder for solution for injection vials cannot be issued.

If a prescriber wishes to prescribe an unlicensed import, an FP10 paper prescription should be issued as Esomeprazole 40mg powder for solution for injection vials and endorsed by the pharmacy as a non-Part VIIIB special.
