Key Summary
- Digital tools to provide personalised asthma support.
- Easier digital plans and at-home testing to help daily control.
- The tools do not intent to replace healthcare appointments.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended eight digital tools to help those struggling with asthma receive personalised support.
In its draft guidance, NICE suggests the tools be used in the NHS until sufficient evidence is gathered over a three-year process.
The tools recommended are: Asthmahub, Asthmahub for parents, AsthmaTuner, Digital Health Passport, Luscii, myAsthma, RDMP (Respiratory Disease Management Platform) and Smart Asthma.
However, the guidance tempers that the “technologies work alongside regular healthcare appointments, not as replacements”.
Digital plans
Patients can struggle with conventional paper-based action plans which can be forgotten or misplaced. It is hoped that the new tools will lead to digital plans that are easier to use.
The suite of tools also includes at-home spirometry testing, which could help alleviate the backlog of people waiting for diagnosis, NICE suggests.
The guidance is open for consultation from health professionals, patients and the public until 21 January, 2026.
