The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has appointed Professor Amira Guirguis as its new Chief Scientist.

She is currently a professor of pharmacy, deputy pro vice chancellor and the MPharm programme director at Swansea University, and succeeds Professor Parastou Donyai in the role.

Professor Guirguis is also the chair of the RPS Science and Research Committee, which provides strategic leadership, advocacy and expert advice on pharmaceutical science and research to the RPS and external bodies.

In her new role, she will ensure that scientific and research expertise continues to inform the work of the RPS and the future Royal College of Pharmacy.

She will play a key role in raising awareness and understanding of how science and research drive the development and use of medicines, supporting the continued advancement of pharmacy practice.

Professor Guirguis will begin her role as RPS Chief Scientist on a phased basis from 13 October, while continuing her academic position at Swansea University.

RPS chief executive Paul Bennett said, "Amira’s expertise, leadership, and passion for pharmaceutical science will be invaluable as we transition to become the Royal College of Pharmacy.”

Professor Guirguis said, “I’m honoured to take on the role of Chief Scientist at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. Science is at the heart of pharmacy, and I look forward to collaborating with colleagues across the profession to ensure that scientific excellence continues to enhance patient care and public health.”
