The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has issued a Serious Shortage Protocol (SSP) following supply disruption of Fluoxetine 40mg capsules.

With effective from Wednesday (20), pharmacists have been suggested to provide two Fluoxetine 20mg capsules in response to the serious shortage affecting the 40 mg capsules.

The SSP6, which takes effect from today (May 20), will expire on July 20.

All community pharmacy teams will receive an email to their shared NHSmail account informing them of the latest SSP and have been asked to implement the protocol with immediate effect.

The Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee has issued a detailed guidance on what pharmacists need to do in regards to dispensing an supply.

In March, DHSC had issued a SSP for Fluoxetine 10mg tablets, following a significant disruption to the supply of the antidepressant.
