Sugar free Sulfasalazine 250mg/5ml oral suspension of Rosemont Pharmaceuticals will remain out of stock in August and resupply date is expected by the end of next month, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has said in a supply notification.

However, Sulfasalazine 500mg tablets will remain in stock, DHSC added.

Some special manufacturers are able to produce an unlicensed sulfasalazine 250mg/5ml sugar free oral suspension.

“When prescribing a product that is not licensed in the UK prescribers must indicate on the FP10 prescription that an unlicensed product is required. This can be done by annotating the prescription with the wording “special order”, DHSC said.

There is currently no listing on dm+d for the imported product for prescribers to select using their prescribing systems.

If a prescriber wishes to prescribe an unlicensed import, a paper prescription should be issued as ‘Sulfasalazine 250mg/5ml sugar free oral suspension (Special Order)’ and endorsed by the pharmacy as a non-Part VIIIB special.
