Boots has claimed that the launch day of the Wegovy pill on Monday (6) was one of the busiest days for customer consultations at Boots Online Doctor.
The UK’s leading health, wellness and beauty retailer said that 80 percent of patients accessing the service on that day were new to its online weight loss service.
Around 10 percent of patients had previously tried weight-loss injections but stopped and now want to explore the tablet option.
Boots UK chief health office Jamie Kerruish said, "We've seen unprecedented interest since the launch of the oral Wegovy tablet; launch day was one of our biggest ever days for customer consultations. What's particularly interesting is that the tablet appears to be providing options for people who have not previously accessed weight loss medication.
"Around 80 percent of people accessing the service were new to the Boots Online Doctor weight loss service, and a further 10 percent had previously tried weight loss injections but had not continued and are now exploring the tablet option.
"This reinforces that patients value having more choice and that different treatment options can help us support more people who may benefit from clinically appropriate weight management support."
Before the pill's launch, Boots received strong interest, with thousands of customers completing consultations to be one of the first to receive the new oral medication.
The pill, manufactured by Novo Nordisk, has opened up a new treatment option for those who were uncomfortable with self-injection or preferred oral medication.
Customers will also be able to access the oral Wegovy treatment in Boots stores from 12 July.
Boots in-store weight loss service is available in 62 stores across the UK, with an additional 25 stores being rolled out in the coming weeks nationwide.
The Wegovy tablet was approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) last month and is now available privately.
It is currently not available via the NHS, pending clearance by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
