The Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) has launched a new Optimise face-to-face workshop titled Type 2 diabetes: Optimising safe and personalised management.

The workshop, supported by Diabetes UK, is designed for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and trainee pharmacists working in hospital and general practice settings.

For primary care providers it comes at a critical juncture as NICE had recently updated guidance allowing the use of SGLT-2 inhibitors, known as ‘flozins’, in early stages while treating diabetes patients, to protect their heart and kidneys.

Through 20 minutes of preparation and a structured 40-minute discussion, participants debate controversial statements, explore clinical challenges and practise person-centred consultation skills.

Key topics include protocols for stopping and restarting medicines during acute illness or surgery, determining implications of changing metabolic parameters and making justified decisions about SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists.

The programme also includes a video from a person living with type 2 diabetes, offering insight into lived experience, sick day rules and health inequalities. This ensures discussions remain grounded in real perspectives.

According to the CPPE, these sessions create space for thoughtful discussion, shared learning and practical insight from colleagues. Participants leave with practical next steps, greater confidence and a clearer approach to shared decision making.
