Key Summary
- A flu-like “copycat” virus (adenovirus) is spreading alongside flu
- It can last longer than flu and affects all ages, especially the vulnerable
- Good hygiene and staying home if unwell can help stop the spread
While the nation is grappling with a spike in flu cases, health experts warn that a flu “copycat” virus was also spreading vigorously across England.
The throat and respiratory bug, known as adenovirus, carries similar symptoms to the flu virus, such as a runny nose, a sore throat, and deep fatigue, but it lasts longer than flu and can infect people of all ages, The Sun reports.
As per the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), adenovirus is a cluster of common respiratory bugs that spread quickly during winter and spring, along with common viruses like norovirus, Covid-19, etc.
While some adenoviruses target the respiratory tract, others affect the eyes and gut, stated Ian Budd, leading prescribing pharmacist at Chemist4U.
Unlike flu, the cause pink eyes, eye inflammation with grittiness, itching and watering. The other symptoms include gastrointestinal issues like nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
Babies, children under five years, older adults, pregnant women and individuals with poor immunity are at high risk of the virus.
It spreads through proximity to the infected person, or touching infected materials.
People must wash their hands regularly with soap, avoid touching face or eyes, cover coughs and sneezes with tissue or elbow.
Those infected should wear a mask and stay at home in case of symptoms are also important practices.
