The House of Lords Public Services Committee will be publishing a report on medicine security on Wednesday (4).
The report will list the steps the government and NHS should take to strengthen medicine supply and the resilience of supply chains.
The committee noted that there have been increasing concerns about medicine security, with reports of medicine shortages on the rise.
In 2025, 73 percent of pharmacy workers stated that ongoing medicine supply issued were putting patients at risk.
Further, the majority of active ingredients required for medicines used by the NHS are controlled by China and India leaving the UK at risk from geopolitical tensions.
The government recently banned aspirin from being exported following reports of shortages in pharmacies.
A snap survey by the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) has found that pharmacies across the UK are facing a widespread shortage of low-dose aspirin, a vital medicine for heart and kidney patients.
