  • The hospital was told to submit remedial actions taken to avoid such lapses in the future

A coroner’s report has flayed James Paget Hospital in Gorleston, Norfolk, for the death of a patient due to cardiac arrest in August 2024.

The hospital has been accused of lapses in monitoring Susan Young (63), who died due to overdose.

She had suffered from various cardiac problems for a long time.

As per the coroner, Yvonne Blake, the staff did not notice the unused medicines among her belongings as they moved her from the emergency ward.

Young was hospitalised last August after taking an overdose of prescription medicine for her epilepsy for two consecutive days.

Though the emergency staff monitored her heart, they failed to transfer some vital information to other wards during her transfer.

“The nursing staff did not give any handover and certainly no instructions about cardiac monitoring when she was transferred to another ward,” Blake said.

She was then found unresponsive and revival attempts failed, resulting in her death.

The hospital has been provided time till August 20 to submit their action plan to prevent such incidents in future.
