Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) has created new learning tools to help NHS Wales professionals build confidence with Artificial Intelligence (AI).
AI is already reshaping the NHS, from triaging patients and reducing admin, to faster detection of deterioration. But healthcare staff need to understand how AI works, its benefits and risks, to ensure that these tools work safely and effectively.
HEIW learning tools have created new, practical ways for NHS Wales staff to explore AI. It offers a free Foundations of AI in Healthcare course on the national learning platform Y Ty Dysgu, which can be completed in less than 30 minutes.
This course demystifies AI terms, shows real healthcare examples, and highlights key ethics like transparency, bias, and keeping a human in the loop.
HEIW will be launching HALI, a Healthcare AI Learning Interface, this autumn. HALI is a role-specific AI chatbot mentor built into Y Ty Dysgu.
It will give learners AI examples tailored to their job, like rota planning or retinal screening, while reminding them of the technology’s limitations and risks.
HALI has recently undergone internal testing and will be available to all NHS Wales staff later this year.
HEIW clinical lead for artificial intelligence Alex Aubrey said, "These tools are part of HEIW’s wider digital ambition to build a workforce that is confident, informed and innovative in its use of AI.”
