Ahead of the upcoming Bank Holidays, the Community Pharmacy Patient Safety Group (CPPSG) has released two resources aimed at supporting community pharmacy teams with opioid treatment.

The video series “Focus on Methadone” is designed to support safe and effective practice within community pharmacy from a patient safety perspective.

It provides practical hints and tips to support the safe supply of methadone through an opioid treatment programme, reinforcing best practice standards.

This is the latest of CPPSG's ‘Focus on…’ video series.

The group has also created a Bank Holiday checklist to aid pharmacy teams before, during and after Bank Holidays.

It supports pharmacy teams to plan and manage opioid treatment programme prescriptions (e.g. methadone/buprenorphine).

CPPSG chair Martin Sadr-Kazemi said, “Community pharmacy teams play a huge role in supporting people who access methadone and other medicines through opioid treatment programmes and are well positioned to provide good care and advice.

"As we near the Easter period with multiple public holidays and likely different pharmacy opening times to usual, it is important that pharmacy team members plan ahead.

"We hope that this latest video, ‘Focus on Methadone’, and the Bank Holiday checklist helps to support community pharmacy teams to continue to safely deliver opioid treatment programmes to their clients, by sharing insights gathered from members of the Community Pharmacy Patient Safety Group”.

Roz Gittins, Chief Pharmacy Officer and Deputy Registrar, GPhC said, “Providing people with medicines for opioid dependence over Bank Holiday periods can bring additional challenges to community pharmacy. It's great to see the CPPSG sharing resources to support pharmacy teams to prepare ahead of the busy Easter period.”
