Phyllocontin tablets are being discontinued

The Department of Health and Social Care (DH) has issued a medicine supply disruption alert for Phyllocontin (aminophylline) 225mg and 350mg modified release tablets.

The supply alert issued said Phyllocontin Continus 225mg and Phyllocontin Forte Continus 350mg modified-release tablets are now being discontinued in the UK.

While all remaining supplies of the 225mg strength are expected to be exhausted by March 2, the 350mg strength are expected to be exhausted by April 5.

Phyllocontin is used in adults for the treatment and prophylaxis of bronchospasm associated with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic bronchitis. For children, it is used for the management of asthma.

Prescribers should review all affected patients and optimise inhaled therapies, and patients who still require a methylxanthine would need to be switched to theophylline tablets, the MHRA said.
