The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has warned warning people against botulism, a condition caused by unlicenced or fake cosmetic procedures involving botulinum toxin.
Around 41 confirmed cases of iatrogenic botulism were reported between June 4 and August 6 this year.
The common symptoms are difficulty in swallowing, slurred speech and breathing difficulty requiring respiratory support.
The cases have been reported in north east, east midlands, east of England, north west, and Yorkshire and Humber.
The investigations are ongoing, but evidence so far suggests the use of an unlicenced Botox-like product.
The UKHSA has urged the healthcare personnel to look for botulism cases among those who have recently undergoing cosmetic procedures and help the victims.
The agency has advised people to ensure that only licenced products are used during the procedure, and avoid online purchase of such products.
“Botulism related to aesthetic procedures is rare, but it can be serious. It is caused by toxins produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. These toxins (but not the bacteria) are the active ingredient in ‘Botox’ and similar products,” said Dr Gauri Godbole, consultant medical microbiologist at UKHSA.
Dr Alison Cave, MHRA chief safety officer added that, “Botulinum toxin should only be sold or supplied in accordance with a prescription given by an appropriate practitioner such as a doctor or other qualified healthcare professional.”
“Buying botulinum toxin in any other circumstances significantly increases the risk of getting a product which is either falsified or not licenced for use in the UK.”
“Our Criminal Enforcement Unit works hard to identify those involved in the illegal trade in medicines and takes robust enforcement action where necessary. This can include criminal prosecution,” Dr Cave added.
