Key Summary

  • Xarelto (1mg/ml) oral suspension pack sizes have been updated
  • New sizes are 103.4 ml for children over 4 kg and 51.7 ml for under 4 kg
  • Pharmacies should supply the nearest full pack until systems are fully updated

The pack sizes of Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) 1mg/ml /oral suspension granules have been altered from July 1.

Xarelto is a medication from the antithrombotic medicine category with the active substance rivaroxaban.

It prevents blood clotting in the body and is effectively used in newborns, toddlers, children as well as adolescents below 18 to prevent the blood clotting tendency.

The pack size prescribed for children weighing 4 kg and more is now available as 103.4 ml packs while the children weighing less than 4 kg can utilise the new 51.7 ml packs.

Previously, pack sizes in the Drug Tariff and NHS dm+d showed the amount of water added, not the final volume of the reconstituted Xarelto suspension.

The new 51.7 ml pack is not listed in the Part VIII of the Drug Tariff, whereas the new 103.4 ml is listed.

The new changes are identified by the Community Pharmacy of England. They find the differences between the listed and actual volumes of reconstituted Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) 1mg/ml oral suspension.

Like any other medicines, Xarelto also comes with side effects. Some common side effects of it shown in children are vomiting, nose bleeding, fever, headache, etc.

Pharmacies might still receive old pack size prescriptions due to the pending system updates.

Therefore, as both are in special containers, supply the nearest full pack to the amount prescribed.
