CPPE launches e-learning programme on menopause for pharmacy

The Centre for Pharmacy Post-Graduate Education (CPPE) has launched Menopause – an introduction for pharmacy professionals e-learning programme.

The new Menopause: an introduction for pharmacy professionals e-learning programme aims to support pharmacist’s to increase their knowledge and awareness of menopause and perimenopause, helping them to have initial conversations with those who need support. 

The programme teaches how to equip people experiencing menopausal symptoms with evidence-based information that allows them to make decisions about their own health management.

This e-learning programme considers a range of topics, including the signs and symptoms associated with menopause and perimenopause, how a diagnosis is made and the national context supporting a growing role for pharmacy professionals in menopause care.

It also discusses the benefits and risks of treatment options available, the common misconceptions that people may have about menopause and how to apply the evidence base to practice in order to help support decision making.

After completing this e-learning programme, learners should be able to define menopause and perimenopause and take a person-centred approach in menopause consultations.

One should be able to apply current guidelines and standards to support evidence-based decisions, evaluate safe and appropriate treatment options and develop an action plan and toolkit to help support people who access pharmacy services during their menopause transition.

In July 2022, CPPE published the first ever Women’s Health Strategy for England  with the aim of tackling systemic issues within the health and care systems. It looks at improving the health and wellbeing of women, with one of its focuses being on menopause care. 

The UK Menopause Taskforce has been established to drive the strategy forward, raising awareness of menopause among healthcare professionals, encouraging workplace support and considering further research on the topic.
