The consultation on the proposals to enable all community pharmacies to access hub and spoke dispensing published by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) will run for three months and will close on June 8, 2022.

The consultation seeks the views of stakeholders operating within the community pharmacy sector on key areas, including patient safety, governance, transparency, and accountability, and includes proposals on two different models of hub and spoke dispensing. It includes proposals on two different models of hub and spoke dispensing:

  • Model I, where the medicines are returned assembled from the hub to the spoke pharmacy before supply to the patient
  • Model II, where the hub pharmacy supplies medicines directly to the patient

It is also proposed to enable dispensing doctors (GPs who also dispense medicines and who generally serve remote or rural areas) to access hub pharmacies.

“The government has previously committed to pursuing legislative change to enable community pharmacies to benefit from hub and spoke dispensing models to support pharmacy efficiency savings and release capacity for pharmacists and their teams for tasks other than dispensing,” said PSNC.
