A next-generation robotic pharmacy has been approved for a GP surgery in West Midlands, which will sort and distribute prescriptions.

The Village Medical Centre in Wednesbury, which opened in 2008, had sought extension of the premises.

The applicant, Sukh Singh, had said the introduction of a robot will improve the capacity and efficiency of the pharmacy.

He also claimed the alterations would allow the health centre to take on walk-in day appointments and alleviate the stress of local hospitals.

The council has approved the plan after multiple amendments.

The extension is twice the size of the centre and would provide ten new part-time job opportunities.

However, it would take away five parking spaces, and it was opposed by some council members.

The surgery is located half a mile from the proposed 600-home urban village off Friar Park Road.
