Pharmacy chain Boots has temporarily paused home deliveries of weight loss injections, over safety concerns amid the ongoing heatwave across the country.

This is being done to safeguard the medication during transit, and patients are being advised to collect their injections directly from a local store.

Injectable treatments such as Wegovy and Mounjaro must remain stored below 8C to ensure their quality and overall effectiveness.

Boots has suspended home deliveries after its internal tests found that cold chain packaging cannot reliably hold weight loss drugs within their required temperature threshold when external heat surpasses 30 degrees Celsius.

It said the gel-pack cold chain packaging commonly utilised throughout the healthcare sector for refrigerated pharmaceuticals had never been tested above 30C.

This year the UK has experienced many heat waves during which the temperatures have crossed 30 degrees.

The weight loss injections could lose their quality and effectiveness, if exposed to high temperatures.
