Gel nail polish that contain trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) have been banned in the UK from August 15 onwards over fertility concerns.
The manufacturers can no longer place new products containing TPO on the UK market, and the stock that is already in the supply chain can continue to be sold until 14 February 2027.
TPO is a "photoinitiator", which means it starts the chemical reaction to allow gel polish to cure under ultraviolet (UV) light, giving the manicured nails a glossy appearance.
Studies on animals have linked high consumption of TPO to fertility and reproductive issues.
The European Union had earlier classified it as a CMR (carcinogen, mutagen, reprotoxic), prompting a ban last September.
Persistent health concerns arising from repeated exposure have now led to the UK exercising the same option.
TPO-free gels already exist in the market, and many brands already use them.
Traditional air-dried polishes do not need to contain TPO.
