The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) discussed the new rules and standards for Responsible Pharmacists and Superintendent Pharmacists to provide greater clarity about their roles, at its Council meeting on 15 October 2026.

Once approved, the new standards and rules will help strengthen pharmacy governance and support the implementation of new pharmacy legislation across the UK.

This new legislation, The Human Medicines (Authorisation by Pharmacists and Supervision by Pharmacy Technicians) Order 2025, aims to enable pharmacists to deliver more patient-facing clinical services and pharmacy technicians to maximise their contribution to pharmaceutical care.

The GPhC Council considered the feedback received through a public consultation and further stakeholder engagement about the new rules and standards during the discussion.

The consultation report and Council paper summarising the changes that have been made are available on the GPhC website.

The standards will be kept under review, with further consideration of several issues, identified through the consultation, taking place next year.
