The retailer’s flagship store in Coney Street also faces demolition due to a major regeneration project
The Boots pharmacy in Clifton, near Clifton Green, has put up a notice to inform the community that the shop will be permanently closed from February 17, and that customers can visit the other branch in Coney Street for collecting prescription.
The sign in the store’s window also listed other nearby Boots stores in Front Street, Acomb, and the store in Monks Cross Shopping Park for availing the service, The Press reported.
Closure of Boots branches across York is part of the retailer’s plans to close 300 stores nationwide over the course of the upcoming year, reducing their total number from 2,200 stores to approximately 1,900.
The store in King’s Square was closed in October as the company continues to consolidate stores in close proximity to each other.
Further, the report indicated the pharmacy chain’s flagship store in Coney Street may be demolished in the future, citing a major regeneration project.
Early this year, the Helmsley Group had submitted their proposals for Coney Street and the riverside. to the City of York Council.
A Boots spokesperson previously told the publication that the lease on their Coney Road store will end this year, but they are committed to retaining their presence in the city centre, and they were in the process of reviewing alternative options.
Last month, Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) transferred its £4.8 billion ($6 billion) pension plan to Legal & General, by signing a buy-in deal.
The company said it was the best option to insure all 53,000 members in the Boots Pension Scheme against market uncertainty, improved life expectancies and other risks.
Members of the Pharmacists’ Defence Association (PDA) who have benefits in the Scheme have decided to challenge the removal of the option to retire at 60 without a reduced pension, which followed after the deal.
