The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has extended serious shortage protocol (SSP) for fluoxetine 40mg capsules (SSP06).

The SSP for these capsules has been extended until August 10. “This expiry date may be brought forward or extended, and the content may be amended throughout this period,” a DHSC statement read.

Pharmacists have been asked to ensure that they are using the current version of an SSP before supplying an alternative product.

Reimbursement is for the medicine supplied in accordance with the SSP and not the originally prescribed medicine. In this instance contractors will be reimbursed the Drug Tariff Part VIIIA reimbursement price for the Fluoxetine 20mg capsules.

The reimbursement price will account for VAT payment. Supply in accordance with the SSP will result in the following fees being paid to the contractor:

–One single activity fee (£1.27)
–One SSP fee (£5.35)
