Lancing pharmacist to be honoured with British Citizen Award

The award recognises exceptional people who positively impact their communities throughout the country

Shabbir Jafferali, owner of Wilmshurst Pharmacy in Lancing, is one of 28 remarkable individuals who will be recognised with the prestigious British Citizen Award (BCA) at the Palace of Westminster on Thursday, January 18.

The BCA, in partnership with One Stop, recognises exceptional people around the UK who are making a difference in their communities.

Sussex Express, which first broke the news, stated that Shabbir has been working as a community pharmacist for over 40 years, providing not only health care, but a listening ear and selfless community care.

He treats everyone who use his pharmacy with sensitivity and care, and takes the time to know the names and ailments of his customers as well as their personal circumstances.

The pharmacist and his team worked seven days a week, from dawn to dusk, during the Covid-19 pandemic, ensuring that everyone received their prescriptions.

Even at age 75, Shabbir would work extra hours to provide advice and support to patients.

More recently, he opened the pharmacy all weekend to take blood pressure readings of a recently bereaved person, whose blood pressure suddenly become dangerously high.

Shabbir made time to help another customer who broke down at his chemist, which is located at 58 Crabtree Lane, Lancing, West Sussex, offering not only advice but genuine support and true kindness.

Stephanie Wood, Managing Director of One Stop Stores, said: “This year’s medallists have reminded us of how many amazing people are supporting our communities, especially during such a challenging time.

“At One Stop we serve many communities across the country, and we know how important voluntary work is to support those in need.

“We’re proud to be partnering with the BCA again and to play a small part in helping each medalist to be recognised. Our congratulations go to all honourees”, said Stephanie Wood, from BCA partner One Stop.”

Shabbir will be honoured with The British Citizen Award for Services to Community, receiving the coveted BCA Medal of Honour.

TV presenter Matt Allwright will host the Medal presentation, in the presence of BCA Patrons, Dame Mary Perkins, Founder of Specsavers, and The Rt Hon Lord Dholakia.
