The UK Pharmacy Research Advisory Group (PRAG) has set out an ambitious plan to make research an integral, accessible and inclusive part of every pharmacist’s and pharmacy technician’s career.

The aim is to enable all pharmacy professionals to engage in, support and lead research that improves patient outcomes, advances healthcare and strengthens their professional identity.

It wants pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to routinely lead, engage in and apply research to improve patient outcomes, optimise the delivery of healthcare and advance public health.

10-year strategy

PRAG said its 10-year strategy for pharmacy research encompasses a broad spectrum of activity, and increasing participation across all roles and settings.

The group wants pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to:
  • lead and co-lead research studies and clinical trialssupport research delivery through patient recruitment, data collection, analysis and study coordination
  • use research skills and evidence in practice, for example, audit, service evaluation and quality improvement
  • embed research awareness and capability across all pharmacy roles, contributing to NHS and UK government ambitions for life sciences and innovation that improve patient outcomes

PRAG said equity is central to this strategy, but acknowledged that there is variation in capability, opportunity and infrastructure across professions, sectors and UK nations.

Research equity is central to ensuring that research reflects and benefits our diverse society, it added.

To achieving research equity, both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians should have fair access to research opportunities, support and recognition.

This strategy acknowledges the significant untapped potential in areas currently less engaged in research and commits to addressing structural, cultural and educational barriers that prevent equal participation.

PRAG said it is about creating a culture where every pharmacist and pharmacy technician can see themselves in research, as contributors, collaborators or leaders.

Four goals

It has listed four strategic goals: Build research skills and leadership; develop supportive systems and structures; foster a research-positive culture; and embrace digital and technological innovation.

To attain these goals, PRAG will focus on developing research leadership, skills and knowledge across pharmacy careers, including specialisation in emerging areas such as pharmacogenomics.

It will also build a supportive, inclusive infrastructure that enables pharmacists and pharmacy technicians from all settings to engage in research.

Create a culture where research is an integral, valued part of pharmacy roles, and exploit digital tools and technologies to support and advance pharmacy research.

PRAG will also partner with the NHS, higher education institutions and funding bodies, such as NIHR and Pharmacy Research UK, to secure funding that supports training, digital tools and conference attendance.
