Key Summary

  • Total physical community pharmacies dropped to 9,923 in June, down by 10 from May’s count of 9,933.
  • Independent operators (1–5 units) added 21 net new sites in June, expanding their market share to 51.4%.
  • The 'squeezed middle' (6–99 outlets) faced renewed pressure, shedding 26 sites to land at 1,679.

England’s physical pharmacy network continued declining through June 2026, with brick-and-mortar locations falling to 9,923-a net decrease of 10 sites compared to the 9,933 reported in May.

Building on the structural shifts observed earlier this year, independent operators (1–5 branches) continued to grow.

Independent pharmacies added 21 net new sites in June, rising to 5,096 locations and expanding their market share to a dominant 51.4 percent.

In contrast, medium-sized regional groups (6–99 outlets) - which had shown a brief pause in May after shedding just one site - faced renewed pressure in June.

The segment lost 26 locations, dropping to 1,679 branches and highlighting ongoing mid-market vulnerability.

Large multiples (100+ branches) also continued their steady retrenchment, shedding another 5 sites in June to land at 3,148 branches (down from 3,153 in May and 3,167 in April).

Large pharmacy chains have shed over 2,000 branches since 2021-a massive 39.7% contraction-while independent contractors now officially control over half of the market.

The pressure on late-night healthcare access showed no sign of easing, as 100-hour pharmacies lost another unit in June to stand at 784.

This brings the cumulative loss of extended-hours sites to 312 since January 2021, driven by high overhead costs and staffing constraints.

Meanwhile, growth in the Distance Selling Pharmacy (DSP) segment paused in June. After reaching a peak of 458 units in May, digital operators added no net new units, holding flat at 458.

Including DSPs, the absolute total number of registered pharmacy contracts in England stood at 10,381 in June, down slightly from 10,391 in May.

In April, the 2026/27 Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework (CPCF) settlement has brought little cheer to the community pharmacy sector, that has been battling years of underfunding.

In a recent poll by Pharmacy Business, 47% of respondents stated the new settlement does not help the pharmacies, and it was matched by another 47% who said it helps slightly. The remaining 6 per cent were unsure.
