Whitworth Chemists Limited recently concluded the sale of its 34 community and health centre pharmacies for an undisclosed price to a mix of corporate operators, multi-site operators, and first-time buyers, Christie & Co reports.
The first pharmacy was set up in 1967 by John Whitworth. Later, the family established a pharmacy chain, Whitworth Chemists Limited, in 1999.
The business was brought to the market as the family shareholders were looking to retire.
The 34 pharmacies are located across the North of England - stretching from Blackpool in the West to Skegness in the East, and up to Newcastle in the North East.
The sale process began in 2023, and the last to go on sale was its branch on Broom Lane in Rotherham, which was bought by Broomlane Pharma Limited, a multi-site operator.
The sales process for all the outlets was facilitated by Jon Booth and Tom Young at Christie & Co, which achieved 118 offers from 83 different parties.
Jon Booth, Director - Pharmacy at Christie & Co, said, “It is very satisfying to get the final sale over the line for the family and Directors of Whitworths Pharmacies.
"Having first marketed the full portfolio of trading sites in November 2023, it has been a journey to get to this point, but we have found new homes for a very varied group of pharmacy businesses serving many different communities across a wide area of Northern England and with the full range of dispensing volumes and trading characteristics.
"This project will certainly be remembered for a very long time by me and my colleague, Tom, who was instrumental in the process. We wish the retiring owners the very best and all of the new owners the very greatest success in their acquisitions.”
