Boots and the Pharmacists’ Defence Association (PDA) have concluded negotiations on their 2026 pay claim, reaching a wide-ranging agreement that combines a baseline salary increase with targeted financial recognition for service longevity, store management responsibilities, and clinical independent prescribing.
Effective from 1 November 2026, the deal awards a 3.4% pay increase to all eligible pharmacists within the negotiated bargaining unit.
Beyond the baseline percentage rise, the settlement establishes structured salary floors designed to reward retention and senior retail leadership.
Qualified pharmacists with more than 10 years of service at Boots will see their minimum salary rise to £57,542 FTE per annum, with additional adjustments applied to any pharmacist whose pay remains below that threshold after the 3.4% uplift.
For Pharmacist Store Managers meeting performance benchmarks, the agreement introduces tiered minimum annual FTE salaries tied to physical footfall and operational store tiers:
- Small Stores: £59,145 minimum FTE
- Medium Stores: £62,040 minimum FTE
- Large Stores: £67,210 minimum FTE
Independent prescribing
The package also places an emphasis on workforce development and the clinical transition toward routine independent prescribing.
In recognition of the supervisory burden required to train future prescribers, the non-consolidated honorarium for Designated Prescribing Practitioners (DPPs) has been increased by 10% to £330 per completed IP learner sign-off. The annual honorarium for supervising pre-registration Trainee Pharmacists has risen by 2% to £1,530.
Crucially, pharmacists who transition into practicing Independent Prescriber roles at Boots will undertake a structured salary review with their line manager, securing a guaranteed minimum pay uplift of 3%. This clause applies retrospectively to any pharmacist who stepped into an active IP post since January 2026 without receiving an equivalent increase.
On the operational and rota front, the settlement formalises policies piloted during recent trials:
- Short-Notice Cover: A £75 pro-rata incentive is now permanently extended to cover shifts filled within 48 hours of their scheduled start time.
- Relief Travel Principles: A defined framework governing travel time and expenses for relief pharmacists deployed away from their home branch will go live on BootsLive on 1 November.
- Hard-to-Fill Locations: A transparent governance policy has been established to standardize discretionary location allowances for branches facing recruitment shortages.
In a joint statement, both negotiating bodies noted that the settlement balances financial reward with operational stability, reflecting the indispensable role played by community pharmacists in frontline primary care delivery across the UK.
