Marking the 10th anniversary of pharmacy technicians becoming a regulated health profession in Great Britain, the General Pharmaceutical Council today (July 1) sent an email to all technicians, thanking them for their contribution towards making pharmacy “effective” and “safe” for one and all.
The joint email was signed by Duncan Rudkin, GPhC chief executive; Nigel Clarke, GPhC chair; Keith Ridge, chief pharmaceutical officer for England; and Alison Strath, chief pharmaceutical officer for Scotland.
From 1 July 2011, it became a legal requirement for pharmacy technicians to register with the pharmacy regulator, previous to which registration was voluntary.
Clarke said: “Pharmacy technicians play a vital role within the pharmacy team and in multi-disciplinary teams, most recently demonstrating their professionalism and commitment in meeting the major challenges presented by the pandemic.”
He added that over the last ten years the roles and responsibilities of pharmacy technicians have continued to evolve in order to meet the needs of patients and the public.
“We are grateful for the continued commitment of pharmacy technicians to improving services for their patients.”
