Supply of Diazepam 10mg injection emulsion is expected resume only next year

Diazepam (Diazemuls) 10mg/2ml emulsion for injection will remain out of stock until February 2021, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has said in a medicine supply notification.

Manufacturer Accord is experiencing a longer term supply disruption for Diazepam10mg/2ml emulsion for injection.

According to a notice issued in March, the suply of the drug was expected to resume after September, this year.

Recommended clinical alternatives for the product are available. However, there are insufficient quantities of lorazepam 4mg/ml injection (Ativan) to meet additional demand to cover the supply issue of Diazemuls.

Non-parenteral alternatives include Rectal diazepam (2.5mg/1ml, 5mg/2.5ml and 10mg/2.5ml)- licensed for use in adults and children suffering from epileptic convulsions, the United Kingdom Medicines Information or UKMi has advised in its management guidelines for switching patients to alternative agents.
