Former Health Minister Zubir Ahmed has been appointed Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Kidney Group.

The APPG advocates for improved health services for those with renal disease and works towards improving parliamentary understanding of kidney disease.

It unites parliamentarians dedicated to advancing kidney health policy and ensuring patient needs remain central to healthcare decisions.

Welcoming the appointment, Ahmed said in a LinkedIn post: "After more than 20 years as a transplant surgeon, I’ve seen first-hand how life-changing a kidney transplant can be, but also the challenges facing patients and their families.

"I’m determined to use my experience in the NHS, government and Parliament to push for earlier diagnosis, better kidney care, shorter transplant waiting times and greater support for organ donation.

"I look forward to working across parties, alongside patients, clinicians and kidney charities, to deliver real improvements for the millions of people living with kidney disease across the UK."
