Key Summary
- Eli Lilly and Company acquired three vaccine firms.

- They said that antimicrobial vaccines are increasingly the "only path to prevention."
Eli Lilly and Company has announced that it is acquiring three vaccine developers: Curevo, LimmaTech Biologics, and Vaccine Company, totally worth $3.83 billion (£2.85bn).
The strategy marks a major outreach to infectious diseases, aiming to prevent long-term health consequences (like cancer, neurological issues, and infertility) by stopping infections at their source.
Curevo will be acquired for up to $1.5bn (£1.11bn) in cash. Its lead asset is a next-generation shingles vaccine designed to dramatically reduce side effects compared to the current standard of care.
Vaccine Company will be acquired for up to $1.55bn (£1.15bn) in cash to advance its preclinical vaccine against the Epstein-Barr virus
LimmaTech Biologics AG will be acquired for up to $780 million (£581m) to develop vaccines targeting antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacterial pathogens like Staph infections.
All three transactions involve an upfront cash payment followed by additional milestone payouts as clinical and regulatory targets are achieved.
Daniel M. Skovronsky, chief scientific and product officer, and president, Lilly Research Laboratories, stated that as antimicrobial resistance erodes the power of antibiotics, vaccines are increasingly the "only path to prevention."
"These acquisitions reflect a deliberate strategy to prevent disease at its source rather than treat its consequence."
