General practices in Primary Care Networks (PCNs) in England recorded 34.9 million total appointments in June 2026-up 10% year-on-year, according to official data released by NHS England.
With nearly 35 million consultations conducted, community pharmacies face a corresponding uptick in prescription volumes and dispensing demand.
Of these, 33.8 million appointments-including Covid-19 vaccinations-were logged directly within general practice appointment systems across 98.9% of all GP practices.
The data shows high demand for rapid access, with 45.0% of all appointments taking place on the same day they were booked.
Looking specifically at clinical urgency:
Clinically Urgent Care: There were 6.7 million clinically urgent appointments recorded in June. Of these, 76.9% were dealt with on the same day as booking.
Non-Urgent Care: For non-clinically urgent appointments, 57.3% took place within seven days of booking, and 76.0% took place within 14 days.
Face-to-face consultations remained the predominant mode of care, making up 60.2% of all appointments carried out during the month.
Overall patient attendance was strong, with 89.6% of all booked appointments attended in June.
In terms of clinical workforce roles, GPs delivered 44.5% of all appointments, while practice nurses carried out 18.3%.
Crucial role of community pharmacists
With general practice operating near capacity and 45% of appointments requested for the same day, primary care systems are under immense pressure to triage patients quickly.
These figures highlight the critical role of community pharmacy in absorbing primary care pressures. Services like Pharmacy First, walk-in advice, and over-the-counter care act as an essential safety net when GP appointment books are full, helping divert minor ailments away from surgeries.
System reaction
Responding to the data, Ruth Rankine, the director for primary care, community and neighbourhood health at the NHS Alliance, said: "These figures show a marked increase in the number of appointments in June compared with the previous month – and they are up by more than 10 per cent from the same time last year.
"It’s possible this could reflect the impact of sustained high temperatures which can increase health risks for vulnerable people and have unfortunately led to a sharp jump in deaths linked to heat.
"Great credit is due to GPs and primary care colleagues for the way they are rising to the exceptional challenges of this summer season. They are doing all they can to help people as quickly as possible."
